Compostable Plastic Bags – How Compostable?
Compostable plastic bags, although a good alternative to single use plastic bags, still have their problems. A recent study published in The Guardian, (April,2019) found some compostable bags that were still intact after three years.
The makers of compostable bags such as BioBags suggest 180 days in commercial composting but up to twelve weeks in home composting. Unlike regular plastic bags, BioBags are made from a resin derived from plants, vegetable oils and compostable polymers and can be consumed by micro-organisms that live in our soils.
The problem persists however, that natural resources are still being wasted in producing compostable bags. Further, if these bags go to landfill, they either won’t break down due to a lack of oxygen or if they do will produce more greenhouse gases.
The best solution is to use a reusable cloth bag such as Schandal’s Reusable Rubbish Bin Liner. This liner is washable and leak proof and can be used repeatedly.
We have a problem. What do we do with our garbage now we no longer have plastic shopping bags. Some of us are not happy putting our rubbish direct into the bin choosing instead to use some kind of liner. We can try compostable bags. But are they really the best answer? A little research finds the following information.

Do biodegradable rubbish bags work? And what are the alternatives?
The answer to the above question is – “it depends”.
Many people face the problem of what to do with their rubbish now we no longer have access to single use plastic shopping bags. Compostable and biodegradable bin liners have been touted as a good alternative. However, it does depend on if they are disposed of correctly.
Something is considered biodegradable if it can be broken down by living things, usually by microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. In Australia, the term biodegradable usually refers to plastics that are 'compostable', meaning they will break down when placed in a home compost bin or commercial composting facility. But there are too few of these facilities in Australia and home composting often can’t attain a high enough temperature for these to breakdown.
As an alternative some people wrap their garbage in newspaper presupposing you have regular access to newspapers. Others simply use no liner at all and continually wash their pail or bin. We at Schandal prefer to use a reusable rubbish bin liner that is washable and leak resistant. It is made from coloured material with a PUL liner and will last and last.
How to Line Bin Without Plastic Bags
There are several ways to line your bin without the use of plastic bags.
Go Naked - Use No Liner at All.
Simply empty bin straight into correct waste bin.
Line Your Bin with Newspaper.
Line Your Bin with Other Repurposed Materials. Try paper bags or empty pet food bags instead of plastic.
Line Your Bin with Certified Compostable Bio-Based Bags.
Line Your Bin with Recycled Plastic Bin Liners
Consider trying a cloth bag that can be emptied, washed and reused.

Reusable Bin Liners
Reusable bin liners are a great option to replace those shopping bags you used to Since the Government announced the single-use plastic bag ban, there’s been plenty of chatter about what to line your bins with when the bags are no more.
Many people were loath to buy bin liners, as that seemed contrary to the ban’s aspirations. Newspaper wasn’t an option for everyone (besides, paper may be better off heading to the recycle plant). Nor was a “naked” bin. There had to be another green solution out there.
My curiosity led me to reusable bin liners: a product that will “reduce [your] dependence on oil” and result in totally less waste in your household.
These liners are made from cloth with an inner liner to prevent drip and are fully washable. Once full, you transfer the rubbish into your wheelie bin, wash the liner, and then re-use it. They’re not a completely new concept – similar products have been marketed as washable nappy pail liners for years.
Your New Three “Rs”
Reduce - Cutting back on unnecessary purchases lowers the rate at which materials are used, but also effectively lowers the energy, gas and transportation costs that are accrued when an item is made and sold.
Reuse- when an item is reused, consumption is reduced as a by-product. Less pollution results, and more natural resources are left intact.
Recycle- The term "recycle" refers to the process in which an item or its components are used to create something new. Recycling companies convert the original item and then sell the now-usable material.
